Maize

Maize was born into the beef industry as a twin to a bull calf, making her what is known as a freemartin. Because she was infertile, she could never be used for breeding, and once it became clear she would never have calves, her future shifted toward slaughter. Although a kind neighbor gave her a loving start by bottle-raising her as a calf, Maize eventually returned to the herd she was born into. Thanks to someone who believed her life was worth more than what she could produce, she was given a second chance at Wild Pines Sanctuary.
Leaving everything she had ever known was heartbreaking, and those first days were filled with uncertainty as she called for the herd she'd lost. Little by little, she discovered that this place was different. These days, she's usually one of the first to greet us, especially if she suspects someone is carrying pellets. She happily accepts scratches, gently reaches out for treats, and has become the kind of cow who reminds us to slow down and enjoy the simple moments. Watching her grow from a frightened newcomer into a confident, affectionate member of our family has been one of the greatest joys we've experienced.
